Hunt’s Universal Yacht List

Hunt’s Universal Yacht List (1850–1914) preceded The Lloyd’s Register by 28 years and supplements Lloyd’s since not all yachts that appear in Hunt’s also appear in Lloyd’s (and vice versa).  We have successfully been able to trace all editions except for 1848 and 1849

As the information was supplied by the clubs themselves, the early editions of Hunt’s Universal Yacht List probably provides the best indicator of the development of yachting, year by year. Not confined just to British yacht clubs  the publishers sent out questionnaires to yacht clubs in Europe, the USA and Russia. In later editions the editor requested that yachtsmen themselves provide the information – a less reliable source in terms of accuracy and comprehensiveness.

from Yachting Monthly

Bundle:
Hunt’s Yachting Magazine (1852–1887)
The Yacht Racing Calendar (1888–1895 & 1902–1904)
Extracts from The Field
Yachting Monthly

The Yachtsman Magazine was published from 1891 so Hunt’s Yachting Magazine covers the earlier period from 1852 but only until 1887.  The gap can be partly filled by The Yacht Racing Calendar (published annually) which reprinted the yacht racing reports published over the previous year in The Field, but not continuously. This still left gaps between 1896–1901 and 1905–1914. Accordingly, we have scanned The Field Magazine’s annual end of season reports which covered those missing years.

As a bonus a scan is included of the short-lived monthly publication of 1898 – Yachting Monthly, which should not be confused with the later publication of the same name, which is still going strong today.

Lloyd’s Rules & Regulations for the Construction & Classification of Yachts

This set of books containing the Rules & Regulations were collected by Theo Rye and passed to the Assn of Yachting Historians to make them more widely available.  They will be of particular interest to builders and restorers looking for authenticity in their work.  It is not a complete set, although it is not clear when revised versions were published but they are offered in the interest of availability.  Two other volumes are included – the ABS Guide for Racing Yachts 1981 and a booklet regarding the use of GRP.  Prior to 1889 the rules were included in the Yacht Register – after that they were in separate volumes.

The Yachtsman

The Yachtsman Magazine 1891 – 1939

This new product is a major achievement. No single institution held a complete run of the magazine, so tracing the full set of issues proved a long and difficult exercise, but AYH has now completed the scanning of all 92 volumes and over 38,000 pages.  Click here for more details.
